Custom Toughened Laminated Glass, Sydney
Toughened laminated glass is two sheets of toughened glass bonded together with a strong interlayer. It is stronger than ordinary glass, and if it breaks the pieces stay stuck to the interlayer, so the panel stays in place. Each panel is made to order for your job in Sydney.
It is the glass for places where breakage is not an option: frameless balustrades, glass floors and stair treads, skylights, canopies and structural glass. It is also the way to get very thick glass, up to 25.52mm.
Where toughened laminated glass is used
- Frameless balustrades and Juliet balconies. The usual choice where a broken panel must stay in place, such as balconies and stair voids above a drop.
- Glass floors, stair treads and landings. Thick multi-layer panels, sized by your engineer for the span and load.
- Skylights, canopies and awnings. Overhead glass needs to hold together if it breaks. Toughened laminated adds strength for larger or walk-on roofs.
- Structural fins and glass walls. Glass that carries load, or tall panes where a single toughened sheet is not enough.
- Shopfronts and security glazing. Harder to break through than single glass, and it stays in the frame.
- Thick table tops, benchtops and counters. Heavy-duty tops and reception counters with a solid, thick edge.
- Heavy-load shelves and display cases. Shelves for books, bottles or stock where a single sheet would flex.
- Feature panels. White translucent or black interlayers for privacy screens, splashbacks and partitions.
Common thicknesses
The thickness is the two glass sheets plus the interlayer. Weight is per square metre.
| Total thickness | Glass | Interlayer | Weight per m² |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10.76mm | 5 + 5mm | 0.76mm | ≈ 27 kg |
| 12.76mm | 6 + 6mm | 0.76mm | ≈ 32 kg |
| 13.52mm | 6 + 6mm | 1.52mm | ≈ 34 kg |
| 17.52mm | 8 + 8mm | 1.52mm | ≈ 44 kg |
| 21.52mm | 10 + 10mm | 1.52mm | ≈ 54 kg |
| 25.52mm | 12 + 12mm | 1.52mm | ≈ 64 kg |
Interlayers come in clear, white translucent and black. Ask us if you need a combination that is not listed.
Thick glass: 12mm, 15mm, 19mm and thicker
If you are looking for thick glass, there are two ways to get it:
- One thick sheet: 12mm clear glass (toughened if needed), or 15mm and 19mm clear glass. Good for table tops, counters and shelves.
- Toughened laminated: two sheets bonded together, from 10.76mm up to 25.52mm. Use it where the panel must stay in place if it breaks, or where you need more strength than one sheet gives.
Not sure which one you need? Tell us what the glass is for and we will suggest a thickness.
Before you order
- Toughened laminated glass cannot be cut or drilled afterwards. All holes, notches and edge polishing are done first.
- Each piece is charged at least 0.5 m², and each order at least 1 m².
- It is made to order, so it takes longer than standard glass. We confirm the lead time with your quote.
- For balustrades, floors and overhead glass, follow your builder's or engineer's specification (AS 1288).
Need standard laminated glass cut to size instead? See laminated glass. For single-sheet safety glass, see toughened glass.

Questions
Is this the same as ordinary laminated glass?
No. Ordinary laminated glass (6.38mm, 10.38mm and so on) is made from untoughened glass, comes in stock sheets and can be cut to size, so it costs much less. Toughened laminated glass is made from two toughened sheets and built for each job, so it is stronger and costs more.
Can it be cut or drilled after it is made?
No. Every cut, hole, notch and polished edge is done before the glass is toughened and laminated. Please confirm your sizes and hole positions before you order. A drawing helps.
How much does toughened laminated glass cost?
Much more per square metre than a single toughened sheet of the same thickness, because it is two toughened sheets plus the interlayer. The final price depends on the thickness, size, edge work and number of pieces, so we quote each job. Send us your sizes and we will reply with one total price, including delivery in Sydney.
Is there a minimum order?
Yes. Each piece is charged at least 0.5 m², and each order at least 1 m².
Do you need an engineer for floors or balustrades?
Often, yes. Balustrades, floors and overhead glass must meet AS 1288 and the building code, and floors and structural glass usually need an engineer's design. We supply glass to the thickness you specify. We do not design or install.
I just need thick glass. What are my options?
For thick single sheets we can supply 12mm clear glass (toughened if you need it) and 15mm and 19mm clear glass. If you need the panel to stay in place when it breaks, or to be thicker than 19mm, toughened laminated glass goes up to 25.52mm.
