Acid etched, sandblasted or film?
Our frosted glass is acid etched, often sold under the name Matelux. The etching gives an even satin finish that resists fingerprints and wipes clean. Sandblasted glass has a rougher surface that marks more easily, and frosted film can peel and bubble in a steamy bathroom. If a quote or plan says Matelux, this is the glass.
Where it is used
- Bathroom windows and shower screens. Full privacy with plenty of light.
- Office and home partitions. Separate a room without making it dark.
- Front door sidelights and laundry doors.
- Splashbacks and cabinet doors where you want a soft white look.
Which side faces out?
Only one face is etched. In a shower or a kitchen, put the smooth face on the wet or greasy side so it is easy to clean. In a window, the etched face usually goes inside, away from the weather.
Which thickness?
4mm to 6mm for framed windows, doors and cabinets; 10mm or 12mm for frameless shower screens and free-standing partitions. Any frosted panel in a door, a bathroom or low to the floor should be toughened.

Questions
Which side of frosted glass faces out?
For windows the frosted side usually goes inside, where it stays clean. For shower screens, put the smooth side to the water so it is easier to clean.
Acid etched or sandblasted?
Acid etched has a finer, more even finish and does not show fingerprints the way sandblasted glass does.
How private is acid etched glass?
You cannot see detail through it. At night, with a light on behind it, you may see a blurred shape right up against the glass, but nothing more.
Does frosted glass get dirty easily?
Acid etched glass is much easier to keep clean than sandblasted glass. Wipe it with a soft cloth and plain glass cleaner; avoid abrasive pads on the etched side.
