Toughened glass cut to size, Sydney

Toughened (tempered) glass is about four to five times stronger than ordinary glass, and if it does break it crumbles into small blunt pieces instead of sharp shards. That is why Australian Standards require it in doors, bathrooms and anywhere people can walk into glass.

Where toughened glass is required

Under AS 1288, safety glass is required in:

  • doors, and side panels next to doors;
  • shower screens and bath enclosures, and glass in bathrooms generally;
  • any glass with its lower edge less than 500mm above the floor;
  • balustrades, pool fencing and glass you can lean on or sit on, such as table tops.

Laminated glass is the other kind of safety glass: it may crack but the plastic interlayer holds the pieces together. It suits overhead glass, balustrades and windows where security or noise matter. See laminated glass.

Things to know before you order

  • It cannot be cut afterwards. Toughened glass shatters if it is cut, drilled or ground, so it is made to the finished size. Measure twice.
  • Edges are finished first. The edge finish is done before toughening and cannot be changed later.
  • Holes and cut-outs must be made before toughening. Email us a drawing before ordering.
  • It takes longer. Toughened pieces are processed after cutting, so they take a little longer than plain cut glass. We confirm the delivery window by email.

Questions

How do I know if existing glass is toughened?

Look in the corners for a small stamp naming the standard (AS/NZS 2208). Older glass without a stamp is usually not toughened.

Is toughened glass the same as tempered glass?

Yes. Tempered is the American name for the same product.

Can toughened glass break by itself?

Very rarely, usually from a chip on the edge or a tiny impurity in the glass. Handle and store it on its edges and protect the corners until it is installed.

Do you install?

No. We cut, finish, toughen and deliver the glass; your builder, glazier or cabinet maker fits it.
